Hearing Aid Aftercare

Routine follow-up care and hearing aid maintenance programs are part of our after care service and we will assist you all along.
Hearing aids do require regular maintenance and special care to ensure that they provide consistent performance as they are supposed to do.
Below are some simple tips to prevent and minimise problems:
Keep your hearing aid clean:
Make sure your hands are clean and dry before handling your hearing aids.

Clean your hearing aids and earmoulds each day with a soft, dry cloth. Use a clean brush to clean the end of your hearing aid. If your hearing aid has a lid to protect the sound outlet from wax, lift this regularly and brush underneath. If your hearing aid has any other type of sound outlet protection, replace it as required. Do not hesitate to us if you require help with this.

Avoid moisture and dampness:
Although the majority of hearing aid components have factory protective coating applied, internally and sometimes externally, dampness, moisture or persperation can enter your hearing aid and cause corrosion and subsequently significant damage to the circuitry and other components, leading to costly repairs.
If you have a Dry-Aid Kit or a Dry-Aid Station for your hearing aids, put them in every night with the battery compartment open. This should help to remove any moisture that may have built up during the day. This may be particular important during the hot and humid summer months when you perspire a lot.

If you do not have a Dry-Aid Kit or Dry-Aid Station, ask us to help you or click here purchase on-line.
Should your hearing aids become wet, never put them in the microwave or oven to try and dry them out, and do not leave them close to heaters. Use your Dry-Aid Kit or Dry-Aid Station instead.
Remember to always remove your hearing aids before swimming, showering or taking a bath.

Avoid heat:
Keep your hearing aids out of direct sunlight - don't leave them in the car or other places where they can be affected by heat.
Keep your hearing aids away from any heat source.

Avoid damage caused by ear wax:
Hearing aids are best kept in a drying unit overnight to help remove any moisture from ear wax or other substances that may have accumulated during the day. In the morning use a soft cloth or clean brush to remove any of it before inserting your hearing aids.
Many In-the-ear hearing aids have protective guards over the sound outlet to prevent wax from entering – it is important to clear these guards from wax if possible or replace them. Maintain a sufficient supply or ask us to help you purchase more.
The sound inlet (microphone inlet) on hearing aids also requires regular attention and maintenance to avoid debris and other harmful substances entering.
If you do need help with hearing aid cleaning, please contact Thomas or Louise, who can assist you with hearing aid maintenance, provide you with the required tools and reinstruct you with the procedures.

Keep your hearing aids safe:
Keep your hearing aids out of reach of children and pets. Dogs and cats can be irritated and attracted by the whistling sound from a switched-on hearing aid left sitting on a table or dresser and have been known to chew them, causing substantial damage to the hearing aid.

Insert and remove your hearing aids over soft surfaces such as a bed, or place a soft cloth on hard surfaces such as tables or benchtops to prevent the microphone/receiver of your hearing aid from being knocked about if you were to accidentally drop it.
When you are not wearing your hearing aids, it is best to keep them in their case or in a Dry-Aid Kit to prevent them from being accidentally damaged.
